Imagine peeling an orange in one piece and trying to press the skin flat on a table. What happens? It tears, stretches, and never lies perfectly flat. The Earth is the same — it is a sphere, and no matter how clever the method, you cannot flatten a sphere onto a piece of paper without distorting something. Every map you have ever seen is, in some way, a lie. The question is: which kind of lie is it telling, and why?
