What is adding?
Adding means putting groups together. When you have some toys and get more toys, you add them! We use a plus sign that looks like this: +. The answer is called the total.
Adding small numbers
Let's start with small numbers up to 10. You can use your fingers to help! Count the first number, then count on more. The number you reach is your answer.
Counting on is a great trick
Say you have 3 apples and get 2 more. Start at 3, then count on: 4, 5. You have 5 apples! Counting on helps you add quickly.
Using number lines
A number line shows numbers in order. To add, start at the first number and jump forward. If you add 3 + 4, start at 3 and jump 4 spaces forward to land on 7.
Practice makes it easier
The more you practise adding, the faster you get! Soon you will know some additions by heart. Keep trying and you will do brilliantly!
