What is a percentage?
A percentage is a special fraction with 100 as the denominator. The symbol % means 'out of 100'. So 25% means 25 out of 100. Percentages help us compare amounts easily in everyday life.
Turning fractions into percentages
To change a fraction into a percentage, make it out of 100. Multiply the fraction by 100, then add the % symbol. For example, ½ becomes 50% because ½ × 100 = 50.
Turning decimals into percentages
Decimals are even easier to convert! Multiply the decimal by 100 and add the % symbol. Moving the decimal point two places to the right does the same thing. So 0.75 becomes 75%.
Why this works
Remember that 'percent' means 'per hundred'. When we multiply by 100, we are asking 'how many out of 100?' That is exactly what a percentage tells us.
Worked examples
1. Convert ¼ to a percentage.
- Multiply the fraction by 100: ¼ × 100 = 100 ÷ 4
- Work out 100 ÷ 4 = 25
- Add the percentage symbol: 25%
2. Convert 0.6 to a percentage.
- Multiply the decimal by 100: 0.6 × 100 = 60
- Add the percentage symbol: 60%
- You can also move the decimal point two places right!
3. Convert ⅕ to a percentage.
- Multiply the fraction by 100: ⅕ × 100 = 100 ÷ 5
- Work out 100 ÷ 5 = 20
- Add the percentage symbol: 20%
